Based on shiny herring, these 'Silver Darlings' are a nod to my own culture, growing up in the fishing village of Pittenweem.
The name was given to herring back in the early 1800's for their bright, glistening sheen as well as their value. They are a significant part of Pittenweem’s history (as well as most communities and villages around the Scottish coast), with fishing being mainstay of the town and the Fisher Lasses playing their important role. I want to celebrate these strong, independent and resilient women who worked their fingers quite literally to the bone while the men in their families were at sea. Now, this part of our culture is remembered though stories, books, art (in particular that of John McGhie) and songs.
The pendant has two wee fish hanging together. Because each one is handmade, they may be very slightly different from the photographs.
These are presented in jewellery box with a story card inside which shares the inspiration.
Please note, photographs are also shown of the matching silver earrings, pewter keychain and jewellery which are all available in separate listings.
This comes with a story card to explain a bit more about the inspiration of this design.
